We have lost a member of the 28 Barbary Lane family.
Marcus D’Amico — who brought the beloved Tales of the City character Michael “Mouse” Tolliver to life in the original 1993 PBS miniseries — died from pneumonia on December 16 at the age of 55. His sister, Melissa D’Amico, confirmed the news to Queerty.
“Not only have I lost my beautiful brother but the world has lost an incredibly talented actor and director,” Melissa wrote on Instagram. “Words cannot express how much I miss him.”
In addition to playing the lovable Mouse, Marcus portrayed Hand Job in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket and had various roles on British television. His was last seen on the TNT series The Alienist. Marcus also performed on stage and was nominated for an Olivier Award for his role in the 1992 National Theater production of Angels in America.
Even though he brought Mouse to life, Marcus did not reprise the role for the show’s sequels, More Tales of the City and Further Tales of the City. The character was most recently portrayed by Murray Bartlett in the 2019 Netflix limited series.
Mouse was the central character of the seventh book in the Tales of the City novels, Michael Tolliver Lives.
Rest in peace, Marcus.
