The fight for transgender equality is more urgent than ever. Just ask Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen.

A Cuban American LGBTQ+ activist and proud trans man, Heng-Lehtinen has worked with leading advocacy groups like GLAAD, the Transgender Law Center, the National LGBTQ Task Force, and more. He is currently the executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), which advocates for policy change to better the lives of trans people across the United States. The organization’s work has only become more vital amid this year’s unprecedented onslaught of anti-transgender legislation.

Speaking to Logo, Heng-Lehtinen says he has expressed his Pride in the past year by helping to elect President Joe Biden as part of the NCTE Action Fund. “Since then, I’ve been working with the Biden administration to get us our rights back,” he explains, alluding to the previous presidential administration’s many attacks on transgender Americans.

As for other advocacy groups doing the work? Heng-Lehtinen shouts out the TransLatin@ Coalition, a Los Angeles-based advocacy group that serves trans, gender nonconforming, and intersex Latina immigrants in the U.S. “They are an amazing organization by and for transgender Latinas,” he shares.
