“Power Bottom Rapper” Lil Nas X Announces Debut Album Release Date

"It’s definitely deeper, but it still has its bops," said the artist about his highly anticipated record.

Clear your schedule on September 17 because that’s when Lil Nas X finally drops his highly anticipated debut album, Montero.

The chart-topping out rapper has already had quite the year, with his massive hit song “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” setting Twitter ablaze, satanic lap dance and all. After his latest no. 1 single, “Industry Baby,” Nas X took to Twitter on Wednesday (August 25) with a video announcing the release date of his album.

In the video, a lizard host of the Montero News Network (played by Nas X) delivers the breaking news that the “power bottom rapper” has escaped from prison, where he was being held in the “Industry Baby” video. After the news clip ends, Nas X is shown driving a convertible through the desert past a sign that reads “Montero Next Stop.” He eventually stops at a roadside phone booth, where he is transported into another dimension to the sound of a catchy new bop.

“Creating this album has been therapy for me,” the 22-year-old artist said in a statement. “I’ve learned to let go of trying to control people’s perception of who I am, what I can do, and where I will be. I’ve realized the only opinion of me that really matters is my own.”

Explaining the album to Rolling Stone, Nas X said: “It’s all connecting to one little world. It’s pretty cohesive. It’s very much straightforward, like, okay, this Montero: This is how I feel about the future, about this past event, about this current thing going, this part of my love life, this part of family, this part of my career, you know? I really wanna let people to get to know Montero. It’s definitely deeper, but it still has its bops.”

The Montero debut is only the latest bit of news for Nas X’s busy summer. He will be performing at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards after scooping up five nominations. He was also recently appointed Taco Bell’s “Chief Impact Officer,” where he will collaborate with the fast-food company on menu “innovations” and offer an exclusive experience around the upcoming release of his album.
