Bowen Yang and Joel Kim Booster to Change at Babylon for “Fire Island”

The queer feature inspired by Jane Austen's "Pride & Prejudice" is headed to Hulu.

Better place an order at Pines Pantry, because out comedians Bowen Yang and Joel Kim Booster are about to transfer at Babylon.

It was announced on Wednesday (June 30) that the duo will star in Fire Island, a gay rom-com set on New York’s famed haven for queer people. Booster wrote the script, and Spa Night director Andrew Ahn will helm the feature.

According to the film’s official synopsis, Fire Island “is an unapologetic, modern-day rom-com inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The story centers around two best friends who set out to have a legendary week-long summer vacation with the help of cheap rosé and a cadre of eclectic friends.”

If the movie sounds familiar, that’s because it was originally announced last year as a Quibi series. According to Variety, the project will now be released as a feature by Searchlight, available exclusively on Hulu.

“For the last couple of years I’ve been threatening to pitch a gay Pride and Prejudice adaptation that takes place entirely on Fire Island and I finally found a platform foolish enough to do it,” Booster previously tweeted.

“This is my version of Sandler telling Netflix he has to film his next movie on the Amalfi Coast or some shit. Only I’m making all my friends wear speedos on Long Island in April,” the Sunnyside star continued. “I’m just laying the groundwork for my real passion project: Persuasion, set on an Atlantis Cruise.”

Though the Pines and Cherry Grove communities of Fire Island have long been safe havens for gays and lesbians, only a few films, like Longtime Companion, Parting Glances, The Normal Heart, and 2019’s Last Ferry, have taken place there. Fire Island — not to be confused with the 2017 Logo reality series, ahem — will be shot on the island and in New York City in August.
